about

My grampa Stig left Sweden at 18 by himself. He moved to Michigan and worked as a miner and lumberjack. He met Marion there and they fell in love. They moved to California and built a home and a family together.

They had a lovely life. Two months after their second daughter (my mom) gave birth to me, Marion passed away unexpectedly in her sleep. This was a shock to everyone in the family.

I’ve been trying to fathom what that would be like. I know Stig had a hard time sleeping after that. And so I wrote this lullaby from Marion to Stig, reminding him that it’s okay to go to sleep.

lyrics

Stig rode his boat offshore
Wanted to find some more
Met a girl in Michigan
Fell in love dancing
Now there’s broken glass on the floor
Doesn’t want to go out that door no more
What was it all for?

Well I hope you know I’m at peace
The end comes sooner than you think
I know you miss me
But darlin, please go to sleep

Built their house with his hands
Don’t know a stronger man
Fifty years working for
a life with someone that you adore
What was it all for?

Well I hope you know I’m at peace
The end comes sooner than you think
I know you miss me
But darlin, please go to sleep

I love you endlessly
Please watch over our girls three
It’s okay if it was all for me

Well I hope you know I’m at peace
The end comes sooner than you think
I know you miss me
But darlin, please go to sleep
