Boy is the first song I wrote. I wrote the chorus first —
“But I, I don’t know, what will happen next, but I oh I am hoping for the best” which is pretty much how I was feeling after surviving bone cancer. It was like a complete and total reset. Made me question everything. The verses investigate the cultural programming I was infused with and hopefully leaves you questioning the validity of what-we-are-taught-to-be-true by the end.
lyrics
Boy
Hey boy, where you going?
Hey boy, where you going?
It’s time to wake up and go to school, make sure to listen and follow the rules
Be a man they say, have a plan they say, Be a man they say, have a plan they say,
But I, don’t know, what will happen next,
So I’m hoping for the best.
Put on a suit and tie, or a uniform of some kind
Put on a suit and tie, keep on working till you die
But I, don’t know, what will happen next,
So I’m hoping for the best.
Make some more money for me, say the ones who profit while you bleed
Do it all quietly, no matter what you’ll never be free
Yes I, don’t know, what will happen next,
So I’m hoping for the best.
Forget all your dreams, keep still, don’t be seen
Let go of everything, it’ll all be gone before you blink,
Not only did I enjoy the lyrics from the very first listen, it also caused me to reflect not only on the lyrics but what I was feeling. There are these brilliant moments without lyrics which provide a space for deep contemplation. It had been a bit since a song hit me as this one did. yodaleiaheehoo
